Wolfram Alpha Knowledge Search Engine

New search engine on the block. Is this a new generation of search engine or a great idea that won’t catch on? Either way it is looking like a brilliant idea and I’m sure a heck of a lot of work.

Wolfram Alpha Knowledge search engine will be launched today, Friday, May 15, beginning at 7pm CST. (so far they are late in launching it). Wolfram and his team have built what he calls a “computational knowledge engine” for the Web. So what does that mean? Basically it means that you can ask it factual questions and it computes answers for you in multiple formats. A screencast showing what it’s capable of is here. (You might need to use IE to view it)

Now this is one geeky search engine LOL.

Disable the Avira AntiVir avnotify & splash screen

Avira AntiVir Personal is a great free antivirus and the only real complaint is the notifier window which can be very annoying. You can however disable the notifier window in Avira free in just a few steps.

Disable avnotify

Windows 2000:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK
3. Expand User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then expand System
4. In the right pane, double-click Don’t run specified Windows applications
5. Click Enabled, and then click Show
6. Click
   Add, and then type the executable file name of the program
   (avnotify.exe) that you want to restrict users from running.
7. Click
   OK, click OK, and then click OK (NOTE: If domain-level policy settings
   are defined, they may override this local policy setting.)
8. Quit Group Policy Object Editor
9. Restart the computer

Windows 2000/XP: (2000 & XP Pro do not require you to boot into safe mode)

1. Boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly after you restart the computer)
2. Log in using the Administrator account
3. Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
4. Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security-> advanced
5. Under the Permissions tab click on SYSTEM under Permission entries:
6. Edit-> Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> ok ->apply-> yes -> ok-> ok
7. Reboot the computer into Normal Mode (start-> shutdown-> restart)

Windows XP Pro & Vista Business/Ultimate/Enterprise

1. Start-> Control Panel
2. Administrative tools-> Local security policy
3. Click on Software Restriction Policy-> Action (at the top)-> create new restriction policies
4. Right-click additional rules (on the right side)-> new path rule
5. Click
   Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\(Avira)\AntiVir PersonalEdition
   Classic\ and double-click avnotify.exe
6. Set the security level to Disallowed-> apply-> ok

Windows Vista Home Premium

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe or for 64bit go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\AntiVir Desktop
2. Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security->
3. Under the group or username SYSTEM click edit
4. Put a checkmark under the DENY column for “read and execute”

Disable the splash screen

1. Open regedit and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
2. In the right pane double-click avgnt and add /nosplash at the end of the path (ex. /min /nosplash)

Microsoft changes ‘Windows Genuine Advantage’

Microsoft will be changing to name of it’s activation and validation system from “Windows Genuine Advantage” to “Windows Activation Technologies” according to a report by Mary-Jo Foley.

However, the “Genuine” brand isn’t completely disappearing. A press release states that Microsoft will continue to deliver genuine updates and notifications for XP users. The program has been criticized for its punishment tactics and false-positive results, even though Microsoft has fixed some of these problems in Vista SP1.

According to Microsoft, Windows 7’s activation will be built on the same software protection platform that was part of Vista, with some minor tweaks made for Windows 7.

“In Windows 7 we modified this process: When customers choose to activate later they will see a dialog box highlighting how activation helps them identify if their copy of Windows is genuine and be allowed to proceed immediately without a 15-second delay. In Windows 7 we’ve made changes so that users will see more informative notifications messages and be able to more easily complete the tasks they need to.”, said Joe Willians, general manager, Worldwide Genuine Windows in a Q&A session.

Rescue CD’s

Here are two LiveCD options that can be used to try and save a badly damaged hard drive due to malware.

First is the Dr. Web LiveCD which also has other useful features. Second is the easier to use but still very effective Avira AntiVir Rescue System.

For help with other malware issues please read this Malware Removal Guide. For help from a malware removal expert you can start a FREE account at the Computer Juice free forums then start a new topic in the Virus, Spyware & Security forum with the requested logs.

The Rescue CD’s are updated sometimes several times a day without notice so that the most recent security updates are always available. It’s best to always use a newly downloaded file when possible but you can download one now “just in case!”

Dr.Web LiveCD

1. Download the image of the Dr Web LiveCD.iso
2. Burn the Dr Web LiveCD ISO images to a CD or DVD.
- If you need a free burning application, CDBurnerXP works on all operating systems from Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 onwards.
3. Start the computer with the Dr Web LiveCD in the CD/DVD tray. As loading starts a dialog window will prompt you to choose between the standard and safe mode. Use arrow keys to select Dr Web LiveCD (Default) mode and press Enter on the keyboard.
4. When Dr.Web LiveCD (Default) is selected, all available disk drives will be detected automatically. The operating system will also try to connect to the local network if available.
5. When the system is loaded, check all disks or folders you want to scan and click Start
6. Let Dr. Web finish it’s scan and then remove any threats found and then exit out of the scanner..
7. Take the CD out of the CD/DVD tray and then restart the computer.

The Dr Web LiveCD also includes other useful features and options for help if needed.

* If you’d like to start the scanner using the command line (console) select Dr.Web LiveCD (Safe Mode).
* Choose Start Local HDD if you want to boot from the hard drive instead of Dr.Web LiveCD.
* Select Testing Memory to launch the Memtest86+ utility.

Avira AntiVir Rescue System

1. Download the Avira AntiVir Rescue System
- If you need a free burning application, CDBurnerXP works on all operating systems from Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 onwards.
2. Place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file.
3. The program will automatically burn the CD for you.
4. Place the burned CD into the affected computer and start the computer with the CD in the CD tray.
5. On the bottom left side of the screen there are 2 flags. Using your mouse click on the British flag to use English.
6. Click on the Configuration button.

- Select Scan all files
- Select Try to repair infected files and Rename files, if they cannot be removed
- Select Scan for dialers
- Select Scan for joke programs (Jokes)
- Select Scan for games
- Select Scan for spyware (SPR)

7. Click on Virus scanner
8. Click on Start scanner at the bottom of the screen.

9. Let Avira finish it’s scan and then remove any threats found and then exit out of the scanner.
10. Take the CD out of the CD/DVD tray and then restart the computer.
